This is the Day the Lord Has Made

But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.
(Jos. 24:15)

I get more likes/reblogs for posting a pretty little picture with a Christian cliche than for posting archaeological evidence supporting the veracity of the Bible?

Modern evangelical Christians are so weak.

I’m off to study the Church fathers, the Reformers and the Puritans. That’s enough Tumblr for now, I think.

You know, when Jesus is in the garden, and three times He prays ‘Let this cup pass from Me,’ I have heard preachers say ‘Well, the cup was the cross, the cup was the nails, the cup was the Roman whip.’ Absolutely preposterous! Because if that were the case, then tell me; how is it that the Captain of our salvation is not as brave as His own followers? Is it not true that after the ascension of Christ, countless thousands of Christians have died on crosses? Crucified! Not only crucified, crucified upside-down, covered in tar, and set on fire to light the streets of Rome! And yet, many of them went to those crosses singing hymns full of joy! So, you’re gonna tell me that the disciples of Jesus go to the cross singing hymns full of joy, but the Captain of their salvation, the Messiah Himself, cowers in a garden and doesn’t want to go? Do you honestly think that the Lord of glory feared a whip? What was in the cup? Throughout the Bible, it tells us what’s in the cup. If I were to sum up all the prophets and put them all together, I could say something like this, God speaking: ‘Because of the iniquity and the rebellion of the nations, I will hand them the cup of My wrath, and I will force them to drink it, and they will drink it, and they will stagger, and they will die.’ Someone had to drink the cup of God’s wrath to satisfy His justice. On that tree, Christ took the cup of wrath, and drank it down.

And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.

The persecution of Christians in the Middle East makes me realize how miniscule my own sufferings are.

Bible Proof #26: Bethany, Where Jesus Raised Lazarus
A village grew around the first-century A.D. tombs that once comprised Bethany’s cemetery. Since early Christian times, one tomb has been said to be that of Lazarus.
By the A.D. 300s, a church had been built over the tomb of Lazarus, with steps leading down into the tomb. Today visitors can still visit that ancient tomb and reflect on the great miracle Jesus performed there.
The village of Bethany is mentioned 13 times in the New Testament. Located on the east side of the Mount of Olives, only a short distance from Jerusalem, it was a favorite stopover for Jesus and the disciples when they came to Jerusalem. It was from Bethany’s cemetery that Jesus raised Lazarus.

But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” - 1 Samuel 16:7

Bible Proof #25: Jericho, Where Jesus Met Zacchaeus
Most of the ruins of Herod the Great’s winter palace at Jericho reveal that it was built in the finest Roman style. Jericho is where Herod the Great built many grand buildings at great public expense.
The Jericho of Jesus’ day lay a few miles south of the Old Testament city. Jericho was connected to Jerusalem by means of a 17-mile-long road that ran through a steep valley. Among the structures discovered there were Herod the Great’s winter palace and a hippodrome (stadium for horse races and other spectacles).
Herod the Great was king when Jesus was born (Matthew 2:1-12). Jericho was the city where Jesus encountered Zacchaeus, a tax collector (Luke 19:2-12). Jericho is also the setting of Jesus’ story of “The Good Samaritan” (Luke 10:30-37).

Bible Proof #24: Gergesa, Where Christ Cast Out Demons
The location of Gergesa has remained a mystery until recently. In 1970 Israeli archaeologist Vasilios Tzaferis investigated ruins of a Byzantine church from A.D. 585 uncovered during road construction along the east side of the Sea of Galilee.
The excavations turned up an ancient church building, monastery, and chapels. A mosaic-paved chapel had been built at the foot of a steep slope, leading Dr. Tzaferis to conclude that the ancient Christians had built the entire complex here to preserve an early tradition that this was where the miracle occurred in which swine ran off a cliff into the sea.
In Matthew 8:28-34 Christ casts demons out of two men into a herd of swine that ran down a steep place into the Sea of Galilee. Two other possible locations were thought to be Gadara or Gerasa (Mark 5:1-13; Luke 8:26-39) but both are located far from the Sea of Galilee or any steep place. The ruins of the El-Kursi monastery probably mark the location of Gergesa.

Bible Proof #23: The Synagogue at Capernaum
Archaeologists have restored a synagogue that stood there some 350 years after Jesus’ time. However, recently it was discovered that this synagogue was built over the foundation of the synagogue from Jesus’ time, confirming that this is the place where important Bible events took place.
Capernaum served as Jesus’ headquarters during His ministry in Galilee. According to Mark 1:21-28, 3:1-6, Luke 4:31-37, and John 6:59, Jesus both taught and healed people in the synagogue there.

Bible Proof #22: The House Church at Capernaum
While excavating an early church building at Capernaum in 1968, archaeologists found that the building had been placed over a house from the time of Jesus.
Words were found scratched on the walls of the house indicating that the early Christians believed the house had been that of the Apostle Simon Peter.
Matthew 8:14, Mark 1:29, and Luke 4:38 all speak of Peter’s house and Jesus’ visits there. This may be the reason Christians began to worship at this site.

Command of Christ #1: Repent, for the Kingdom is at Hand

From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. (Matthew 4:17)

Jesus commands us at the very beginning of His ministry to repent. The word repent is actually the Greek word μετάνοια, or metanoia. It essentially means to ‘think differently after,’ or to change the mind. Change the mind from what? Our current ways, which are sinful. Why? Because the kingdom is at hand, and because that kingdom is ruled by God, and because God does not tolerate sin.

This is what the Apostle Paul was talking about when he said, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Romans 12:2). Our thoughts determine our actions, our actions determine our behavior, and our behavior defines us. Christ commands us to turn away from our sinful thoughts, the thoughts that the rest of of the world have, in order that our actions might change so that, ultimately, we may be defined as Christians, which is the only way into the kingdom.

If you love me, you will keep my commandments. (John 14:15)

Bible Proof #21: Cana, Site of a Wedding Feast
Archaeological investigations show that the ruins at Khirbet Qana were indeed a village during the time of Christ. Its ruins are located about nine miles north of Nazareth.
The Gospel of John (John 2:1-11) records the miracle of Jesus turning water into wine during a wedding celebration in the village of Cana. The finding supports the reality of Christ’s ministry and the historical validity of John’s Gospel.
